Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle (Chiesa 90+4’| Burn 45′, Isak 52′)
Newcastle won their first trophy since 1969 as a consummate performance shocked an exhausted Liverpool at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup.
Dan Burn capped a dream week by meeting a pinpoint Kieran Trippier corner on the stroke of half-time to open the scoring having also earned a first England call-up on Friday morning.
Alexander Isak then had a goal disallowed early in the second half after Bruno Guimaraes was ruled offside, but made up for it moments later by thrashing home a Jacob Murphy knock-down to double a lead Newcastle never looked likely to surrender.
Arne Slot’s side finally rallied in added time as two substitutes combined for their first genuine chance of the match, with Harvey Elliott splicing the Newcastle defence to find Federico Chiesa.
But this was far too little, far too late, as Eddie Howe, Burn and Isak etched their names into Geordie folklore to end football’s most infamous trophy drought in swashbuckling style.
Liverpool player ratings
Caoimhin Kelleher: Had conceded twice before he made a save, but it was a brilliant one to deny a third. 6/10
Jarell Quansah: Given an incredibly tough assignment in replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold and unsurprisingly did not make an adequate replacement. Run ragged by Livramento. 5/10
Ibrahima Konate: Largely excellent but clearly exhausted. Didn’t make it an hour into the match having been hauled off against PSG in the week. 7/10
Virgil van Dijk: Struggled to exert his usual control but still had some strong moments. 7/10
Andy Robertson: A brilliant double block to stop Kieran Trippier from opening the scoring. Faded in the second half but did what was asked. 7/10
Ryan Gravenberch: Moved back to centre-back to replace Konate, another player who looks burned out by this season’s exploits. Not as accurate as usual in his passes and struggled for any real progression. 5/10
Alexis Mac Allister: Not his fault he was put up to mark Burn from a key corner but was overrun by Newcastle’s power and energy in midfield. 5/10
Mohamed Salah: A sharp cross just before half time was his only first-half contribution, then only had three touches in the first 25 minutes of the second. A shockingly poor performance in a tough week for him. 3/10
Dominik Szoboszlai: Could not take a foothold in connecting attack and defence. Created little and was even less of a threat. 4/10
Luis Diaz: The most threatening of Liverpool’s attackers, against an astonishingly low bar. Chased lost causes relentlessly. 5/10
Diogo Jota: Made a hash of Liverpool’s best chance of the first half and did little else. Anonymous. 3/10

Newcastle player ratings
Nick Pope: A stunning one-armed save to stop Jones bringing one back and controlled his area. 7/10
Kieran Trippier: Perhaps lucky not concede a first-half penalty for handball but a perfect delivery for Burn’s corner part of a throwback performance I doubted he was still capable of. 8/10
Fabian Schar: Didn’t quite hit the heights of his partner but a perfectly solid final performance. 7/10
Dan Burn: A pinpoint power header to open the scoring alongside a faultless defensive performance. Must be the greatest week of his life. Expect a new baby announcement in nine months. 9/10
Tino Livramento: Powerful running down the left unsettled Liverpool and kept Salah shockingly quiet. 8/10
Bruno Guimaraes: Ran everywhere doing Bruno Guimaraes things. Benefitted from a fraught, messy game in which he could act as an agent of chaos. 7/10
Sandro Tonali: A sharp first-half shot wide but got bogged down in a scrappy midfield battle, including some lax passing. Did his defensive work dutifully. 6/10
Joelinton: Newcastle’s spirit animal and standard bearer on the energy front. Two crucial interceptions to stop Liverpool scoring and never relented. 8/10
Jacob Murphy: Almost sold his defence short with an aimless header back to Nick Pope on 35 minutes but more than made up for it with a smart knock-down for Newcastle’s second and excellent running. 8/10
Alexander Isak: Thought he had doubled Newcastle’s lead with his first shot on target and did with his second. An astonishingly sharp finish. 7/10
Harvey Barnes: Worked incredibly hard defensively but Livramento got the attacking fruits of his labour. 6/10
