Sky Sports and ITV cameras captured Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer's rollercoaster of emotions as his hometown club ended their 70-year trophy drought against Liverpool on Sunday. However, a message he allegedly sent Mark Chapman during the nail-biting Carabao Cup final couldn't be aired on either broadcast, according to the presenter.
Newcastle triumphed 2-1 at Wembley Stadium to avenge their defeat to Manchester United in the same match two years earlier, deservedly lifting a first major honour since the 1955 FA Cup. Dan Burn followed up his surprise inclusion in Thomas Tuchel's maiden England squad by heading the Magpies into a lead on the brink of half-time. Alexander Isak doubled the advantage early in the second half, setting Eddie Howe and his team on course to making history.
Federico Chiesa struck from the bench during eight agonising minutes of stoppage time, but the Italian's contribution was merely a consolation.
Cameras picked up Shearer rolling through all the emotions throughout the afternoon, displaying intense joy and anxiety from his Wembley box.
After full-time, Chapman joked that a text he received from the BBC Match of the Day pundit in the latter stages of the final perfectly captured his state of mind.
"You can see Shearer on the big screen here, which is why they are cheering," Chapman explained during Sky Sports' coverage of the post-match celebrations.
"About 15 minutes ago, I texted him, 'Are you calm?' I can't tell you what he replied; it will have us taken off the air."
Shearer took his celebrations onto X after Newcastle's historic trophy lift, perfectly capturing the sentiments shared among thousands of jubilant in the capital.
He penned: "Toon Toon arrrmyyyyyyyyy. Ah, man. Did the Geordies deserve that, or what? That was f***ing amazing."
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has etched his name into the club's folklore forever, and he struggled to contain his emotions during the fallout.
