Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes hailed the best day of his life after leading his side to Carabao Cup glory.

Guimaraes played the full 90 minutes - plus 12 nervous minutes of added time - as Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley on Sunday to end the club's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.

Shortly after the final whistle, the Brazilian gave an emotional interview to Sky Sports.

'It's all for these fans,' he said. 'They deserve everything. When I first came here I said I wanted to put my name in history.

'We can now say we are the champions again. This is one of the best days of my life.'

The 27-year-old, who joined Newcastle in 2022, went on to reveal that he had communicated with Alan Shearer before kick-off and that he hoped to follow in the former striker's footsteps by becoming a club legend.

'I don't have any words,' he added. 'It's the best day of my life. For them [the fans] it's like the World Cup.

'People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club and it's one of the best days. This is unbelievable.

'This is my second home. We are making history. Some day when I leave this club I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to Shearer.

'He text me before the game. I'm so emotional today.'

Shearer - who scored 206 goals for Newcastle in 405 appearances between 1996 and 2006 - was among the Wembley crowd on Sunday alongside his son Will.

The 54-year-old lost two FA Cup finals at Wembley during his playing career with the Magpies.

But he witnessed his former side end their trophy drought on Sunday thanks to goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.

Shearer was spotted jumping for joy in the stands when Burn headed Newcastle in front just before half-time.

After regaining his composure, at least a little, Shearer whipped out his phone and posted an X-rated five-word tweet.

It simply read: 'Dan f***ing Big Man Burn'.

Newcastle doubled their lead just seven minutes into the second half courtesy of Isak's 23rd goal of the season.

Isak fired home with his right foot from 12 yards, just moments after seeing a goal disallowed for offside.

Newcastle were good value for their victory but they were made to sweat late on after Liverpool substitute Federico Chiesa pulled a goal back in added time.
