Ipswich Town frontman George Hirst has earned his first Scotland call-up.
The 26-year-old qualifies for Scotland through his paternal grandfather and, having previously represented England up to U20 level, has officially committed himself to Steve Clarke's side ahead of the two legged showdown with Greece. Boss Clarke had faced a selection dilemma, with the talismanic Lyndon Dykes ruled out through injury and Ben Doak facing surgery, but now has Hirst for added firepower.
He joins Tractor Boys teammate Cieran Slicker in the senior Scotland squad, after the goalkeeper was called up last week with regular number one Angus Gunn stuck on the sidelines with injury.
Hirst has netted four times in 20 appearances for Ipswich this season, and counts Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday as his former sides. He was a prolific scorer for England at youth level, netting seven times in 13 appearances for the country's U20s, and being named in Team of the Tournament at the 2017 Toulon Tournament that England won.
Boss Steve Clarke is a big fan, saying: "We had our first conversation about a month ago. He comes across as a very nice person. He wants to be here.
"George is someone we have had in mind for a few months. I’ve watched him recently. He is in and out of the Ipswich team, he has played in the cup games.
"He scored against Forest and I was spotted on the telly at the game. It didn’t take a genius to work out who I was there to watch because he was the only one on the pitch qualified to play for Scotland. He is a player who will help give us more depth to that striker position."
