What Dan Burn "doesn't want to do" - and what Alexander Isak thinks of him

Burn headed home the Magpies’ opening goal from Kieran Trippier’s corner as they beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley.

The goal capped a remarkable week for the boyhood Newcastle fan, who also received his first call-up to the England squad ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

“I’ve had worse weeks,” laughed Burn, who started his career in the youth ranks of Blyth Spartans before stepping into the professional game. “I don’t want to go to sleep because I feel like I’m dreaming and it’s all going to be a lie. I feel strange. I feel numb at the minute.”

Alexander Isak scored Newcastle’s second goal, firing home after Jacob Murphy nodded down Tino Livramento’s cross, was the Swede was quick to praise Burn’s impact on the game.

“It was his (Burn’s) game,” said Isak. “He is brilliant. If he can score goals then great, but it’s the way he defends. That sets the foundation for us.”

Newcastle’s win delivered the club’s first major trophy since Bob Moncur lifted the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.

It was the Magpies first success in a major domestic final since 1955, and ended a run of nine successive final defeats at Wembley.

“This is really just the start,” said Isak. “We will see more from the fans and what it means for the people when we get back to Newcastle. We are all aware of how long it’s been for the fans without a trophy.

“This game is about moments, and it’s not about being really good as a striker, but it’s about being there to score when needed.

“The first half was a bit frustrating for me, but I kept telling myself my moment would come. When you’ve been without a trophy for so long, it can be in the back of your head, but hopefully now we have won this, it is bright days ahead of us.”

Joelinton is also hoping today’s historic success is merely the start of something very special on Tyneside.

“It’s the start of a new era for this club,” said the Brazilian, who dominated at the heart of midfield. “It was so disappointing in the last final (in 2023) when we came here and lost. We didn’t want to leave anything in the tank today. Everyone was fighting and running, and I am so glad and happy for the fans.”
