The Carabao Cup final was an amazing occasion. Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley and really could have won by more. It was only Federico Chiesa’s late goal which threatened to ruin the dream.
Newcastle have entered a new dimension now. No longer can the lack of silverware be used as a stick to beat supporters with.
This has been an amazing journey. The PIF takeover was always likely to change the story on Tyneside but few could have imagined things having altered so quickly.
The Newcastle owners have completely transformed the club and Sunday’s Carabao Cup win was further proof of that.
While Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Amanda Staveley left the club last summer, the former sent an emotional message after the result.

Ghodoussi and Staveley were both in attendance at Wembley, watching the team they brought so far get over their biggest hurdle yet.

While there will surely be more finals and more trophies to come, this was a narrative-changing victory.
Ghodoussi and Staveley were not technically part of the success but it was fantastic to see them at the national home of football to share in the remarkable success.
Indeed, he posted an emotional message after the game, saying their dream had come true.

The Carabao Cup win is surely just the start. Clearly, it’s a moment to be savoured and it would be foolish to place too much emphasis on the future now but the ambition at the club is the most exciting part of it all.
