Barcelona produced a stunning comeback to beat Atletico Madrid 4-2 in the Spanish capital on Sunday in a huge top-of-the-table clash. The hosts had looked set for all three points after going 2-0 up, but goals from Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal sealed an incredible win for Hansi Flick’s side.
**FIRST HALF**
Barcelona saw plenty of the ball in the opening 45 minutes but struggled to break down a typically determined and dogged Atletico Madrid side.
Lamine Yamal went close to an opener after just five minutes with a left-footed shot that just grazed the outside of Jan Oblak’s post.
And Barcelona hit the woodwork again just before the break through Lewandowski. Pedri played in the striker but his effort kissed the crossbar on its way over the goal.
The misses proved costly as Atletico struck just before half-time. A long kick out by Oblak was headed on and ended with Giuliano Simeone crossing for Julian Alvarez to smash past Wojciech Szczęsny.
**SECOND HALF**
The second half started with Yamal again firing wide when well placed, before another quick break almost caught Barca out - until Kounde managed to tackle Alvarez.
Barcelona kept pushing but continued to find it tough going which saw Hansi Flick opt to change things and send on Eric Garcia and Ferran Torres for Marc Casado and Dani Olmo.
But the move didn’t work initially as Atletico doubled their lead minutes later. Another ball over the top saw Antoine Griezmann square the ball to Alexander Sorloth to knock home.
Yet Barca hit back almost immediately. Lewandowski smashed a low shot past Oblak to give the Catalans hope and get Flick’s men back into the game.
Five minutes later, Barcelona were level. Raphinha swung in a fine cross for Ferran Torres to flick a really neat header past Oblak to level it up.
The game looked to be heading for a draw until Yamal decided otherwise deep into stoppage time. Barca’s brilliant teenager scored yet another sensational goal to make it 3-2 and spark wild celebrations.
Those celerations became even more raucous minutes later as Ferran grabbed another goal with a low shot to really finish off Atletico and send Barcelona back to the top of the table heading into the international break.
Brilliant stuff.
