The New York Giants are among three franchises vying for Aaron Rodgers' services in 2025, and potentially beyond, but recent developments indicated a good chance that New York was running third among that group.
However, that paradigm shifted with a report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Sunday, March 16.
"ESPN's [Jeremy Fowler] with an update on Aaron Rodgers: 'I'm told from sources that Rodgers does have standing offers from the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants. Teams are waiting this out, waiting on Rodgers," Fowler said, per the Steelers Depot X account. "The feeling is there's not just a money consideration here. There's fit, there's surroundings, all those things. The Minnesota Vikings are sort of on the periphery here. Sources there tell me that it's possible they get involved with Rodgers, but the feeling this week has been probably not. They want to develop J.J. McCarthy."
Rodgers has expressly stated that he will give Minnesota time to form its decision, which is the holdup in the process. However, if the Vikings are leaning toward being out on Rodgers as Fowler reported, that brings new life to the Giants in the conversation.
It's hard to make an argument that New York can offer Rodgers a better situation than Pittsburgh can, at least in terms of winning right now. However, Michael Silver, Dianna Russini and Alec Lewis of The Athletic reported Friday that Rodgers is looking for a deal similar to the $100.5 million contract former Vikings QB Sam Darnold inked with the Seattle Seahawks last week.
That translates into $33-$34 million per year. If the Giants and Steelers are both willing to offer Rodgers an annual salary in that range, it would appear that Pittsburgh has the edge. But if New York is willing to make Rodgers an offer that includes more years at that guaranteed amount, it could feasibly provide the Giants the edge they need to land the four-time MVP.
The problem with that approach is that Rodgers turns 42 years old in December, and despite a quality statistical year last season, his play has clearly dipped from his MVP form of 2020 and 2021.
