Kieran Trippier during Newcastle United's Carabao Cup final defeat of Liverpool
Kieran Trippier was delighted after Newcastle's defeat of Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final
Kieran Trippier revealed why he was 'fuming' with Bruno Guimaraes following Newcastle United's 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. The duo played a crucial role in the victory at Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening, lifting the Magpies' first trophy since 1969.
Speaking on CBS Sports after the game, Thierry Henry quizzed Trippier on a particular moment that could have cost Newcastle the game. The Arsenal legend recalled when Guimaraes' performed a clever turn in the middle of the park, rather than ignite another counter-attack.
"Listen, he is brilliant," began Henry. "I think he is an outstanding player, but lets be honest. What did you think when Guimaraes did the 'Zidane'-turn' in midfield when he could have played that ball, and could have gone on the counter?"
After confirming that that the Frenchman was referencing Guimaraes, Trippier pulled no punches. Without hesitation, the Newcastle defender replied: "Fuming! I was fuming. I was fuming."
As Henry nodded his head in agreement, Trippier added: "In moments like this it's about game management. One simple pass and we're though on goal. But, you know, can't blame Bruno – he's been unbelievable for us."
Henry said: "This is what I'm saying, I was fuming over there. But, he's been outstanding. I was just hoping for you –– what if they made it 2-2?! Ohhh no."
Meanwhile, speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Guimaraes broke down in tears and said: "It's all for these fans. They deserve everything. When I first came here I said I wanted to put my name in history. We can now say we are the champions again.
"This is one of the best days of my life. I don't have any words. It's the best day of my life. For them [the fans] it's like the World Cup. People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club and it's one of the best days. This is unbelievable.
"This is my second home. We are making history. Some day when I leave this club, I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to [Alan] Shearer. He text me before the game. I'm so emotional today."
