Simon O'Rourke: Newcastle United's cup final win means to much to so many

The trophy is Newcastle's first major trophy since 1969, and their first domestic cup since 1955.

Newcastle United haven't won a trophy, especially a major domestic trophy, for well over 12 hours now.

This is a better sentence than the 56/70 year stuff.

It was a wonderful moment to witness and an almost impossible moment to understand. But let's come back to that point.

The first thing to say is Newcastle United won because they were (by such a long, long way) the better team on the day, against the best team of the season.

This was Eddie Howe's masterpiece. I can't tell you how he reduced Liverpool's biggest threats (Mo Salah also played in the 2025 Carabao Cup Final) to insignificance, but, well, that's what happened.

This was a complete win. The plan was inspired and the execution was complete. Which brings us back to history. 56 years. 70 years.

It's just such a long, long time.

Before the match, I spoke to a man who could barely get up Wembley Way for tears, because his Dad, a lifelong Newcastle Fan, had passed away a few weeks ago.

Back in Covent Garden, a load of fans told us they didn't know what to do or what to think. They had no frame of reference for victory.

Later, I spoke to a guy who lost his Mam a short while ago, but kept texting her because it helped him feel better.

This evening he sent her another message: "Mam, we won the cup."
