Callum Wilson has vowed that Newcastle United players want more Wembley successes following the Carabao Cup final triumph.

Emotional scenes emanate around the national stadium as the Magpies ended the 70-year curse. Dan Burn and Alexander Isak got the goals but, in truth, every Newcastle player dug in as Liverpool were put to the sword.

Wilson replaced a jaded Isak in the closing stages and was tasked with grinding out a narrow 2-1 lead. Every run into the corner was cheered by the Toon supporters as Newcastle edged towards victory.

At the full-time whistle, Wilson - who endured hardship under Mike Ashley’s ownership - etched his name into Tyneside history. The 32-year-old alongside his teammates will now be remembered for being the team that broke the decades-long barren spell at St James’ Park.

Speaking post-match, Wilson highlighted how everyone throughout the squad played their part in securing the Carabao Cup triumph. He also insisted Newcastle players are hellbent on making silverware a regular occurrence.

“Everybody played a part,” Wilson told NewcastleWorld. “Even the players in the earlier rounds who got us here. Unfortunately, Lewis Hall, a great player for us this season, didn’t get to share the occasion but we did it today for the fans.

“We’ve all dug in over the period of time when we’ve been fighting relegation and scrambling at the bottom. It was goosebumps (when looking at the Newcastle fans). When we scored, the hairs on your arms stood up.

“Ultimately, the fans deserve this. It was 70 years in the making and thankfully we’ve got the club over the line. Hopefully, this is the first of many. We want to keep building on this. This feeling, what we have now, we want to create it time and time again. Two years ago we failed - today we were successful and hopefully there are many more times (like this) to come.”

Wilson has endured an injury-hit career at Newcastle and suffered further hamstring setbacks this season. However, the prospect of becoming a Wembley hero inspired the striker on his road to recovery.

“There were periods when we were progressing through the rounds and, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take part,” Wilson added. “I was wishing the lads well while hoping we get to a final. When you’re sweating away, grafting, putting in the work, nobody’s watching. These are the moments you think about.”
