Newcastle United beat Liverpool at Wembley to lift their first major trophy in 70 years
Newcastle United defeated Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon to lift their first major trophy since 1955. The Magpies had defeated Arsenal in the semi-finals while the Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur, to prevent a North London derby in the final.
Newcastle ran out deserved winners against a lacklustre Liverpool side as Dan Burn and Alexander Isak - who has been heavily linked with a summer move to the Gunners - scored either side of half time. Federico Chiesa netted in stoppage time to produce a tense finish but Newcastle saw the game out to end their 70-year wait for a major trophy.
Following the victory, Newcastle stars have been sharing their reactions to the victory on social media as they wrote themselves into club folklore.
West Ham and QPR stars react
Isak posted a photo of himself celebrating in front of the Newcastle supports on his Instagram with the caption “History” coupled with an emoji of a trophy. Queens Park Rangers loanee Harrison Asbhy was one of several fellow professionals to react to the post, as he simply responded with an emoji of a goat - a well-known way of referring to somebody as the greatest of all time.
Ashby is at Loftus Road on a season-long loan from Newcastle, having made his temporary switch to QPR back in August 2024. He started his youth career with Chelsea before joining West Ham and signed his first pro deal with the Hammers in 2020 but left for Newcastle in January 2023.
Newcastle’s Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes also took to Instagram to celebrate Newcastle’s win. He posted a photo of himself in the changing room with the trophy and captioned it: “Speechless! After 70 years, we can say that we are champions again! A long text ahead because now I just want to celebrate.”
His post was liked by West Ham star Lucas Paqueta and Fulham’s Andreas Pereira. Guimaraes and Paqueta regularly interact with each other on Instagram. Ashby also commented on the post from Guimaraes with the reply “Herooooo.”
What did the managers say?
After the game, manager Eddie Howe said: “It’s really important. Hopefully one can become more – there’s no guarantee, though – but I just think it proves we can do it.
“I’ve never had any doubts about our ability to lift our game but you don’t get many shots at this, you don’t get many shots at a cup final, and today we had to try to take our opportunity. That’s where the players delivered under pressure so well and so impressively.
“It also proved that we can mix our game against the very, very best. Now the challenge for us is to try to get there more often, as in lifting our game like we did today.”
Liverpool boss Arne Slot reacted: “Disappointing result, disappointing performance, completely different to how I felt after (the) PSG game. It took us seven, eight, nine months to lose twice in a row and it happened against two teams, one fighting for Champions League (qualification) and the other is PSG.
“I want to make clear the week started really well by us beating Southampton. You know if you go further into tournaments that the opposition get stronger and stronger and even Liverpool can lose games. It was a tough week but also a week where we extended our lead to 12 points from 10 but the last two (results) were definitely not what we wanted.”
