Mbappe shatters Ronaldo’s Real Madrid debut record, can he catch the all-time leader?

Kylian Mbappe is close to breaking a Cristiano Ronaldo record at Real Madrid after scoring 31 goals already in his debut season in Spain. Mbappe was signed by Real Madrid at the start of the ongoing 2024-25 season and is only three goals away from breaking Ronaldo’s record of the joint second-most goals in a debut season at the club (33).

Ronaldo scored 33 goals in all competitions during his debut season for Real Madrid, which came in 2009-2010. Ronaldo is second in the list alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy.

How far is Mbappe from all-time record at Real Madrid?

Chilean legend Ivan Zamorano holds the record at Real Madrid for most goals in a debut season with 37 goals in all competitions in his debut season, which was 1992-1993.

Mbappe has a minimum of 12 matches this season to break Ronaldo’s record and he is well-placed to surpass even Zamorano. He has also already surpassed Brazil’s Ronaldo, who scored 30 goals in his debut season (2002-03) at Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old French forward Mbappe initially struggled after joining Real Madrid as he took time to adapt to the system and playing alongside Vinicius Junior who holds the World Cup-winner’s favourite right wing position. However, the former PSG player now looks well-settled at the club, scoring 20 goals just in La Liga, which is the most by a Real Madrid player since Ronaldo fired in 26 goals in his debut season.

The record for most La Liga goals by a Real Madrid player in his debut season is 27, held by the late Alfredo di Stefano.

Mbappe avoids Ronaldo comaprisons

Despite recent success, Mbappe wants to stay grounded and recently said that him scoring more goals than Brazilian Ronaldo or Cristiano in his debut season for Real Madrid doesn’t mean he is a better player than those legends.

“If I score more goals than Ronaldo and Cristiano it doesn’t mean that I am better, just that my first season is better. Scoring goals is important, but it is even more so if we win La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey,” Mbappe said after helping Real Madrid beat Villareal.
