Preston North End keen on £2m Norwich City loan ace

Preston North End are eyeing midfielder Jacob Wright despite the fact his Norwich City loan includes a buy option, as per Alan Nixon.

Preston North End are looking to end this season as strongly as possible. PNE are neither in danger of relegation or considered as play-off candidates.

The Lilywhites sit 14th in the Championship table, nine points away from the bottom three and 10 points off the top six heading into the final eight games of the season.

Paul Heckingbottom and co will have eyes on the long-term and summer recruitment will be key in the club’s progression. The next window will give the boss a real chance to make his mark on the squad too.

Now, writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon says one man of interest to Preston North End is Jacob Wright.

The 19-year-old midfielder joined Norwich City on loan from Manchester City in the winter but a buy option has been included in the deal. That isn’t putting PNE off though, with Nixon saying they may make a rival offer with an expected cost of over £2m.

Wright will have the final say on where his future lies but Preston are keeping an eye on the situation if the opportunity arises.

A first senior loan

Rumoured Preston North End target Wright had played four times for the Manchester City first-team before making his maiden senior loan move to Norwich City.

The midfielder, who has also played at right-back before, has been highly rated in the North West for some time and starred for his club’s U18s and U21s before a rise to senior football.

So far, Wright’s Carrow Road stint has yielded seven appearances. Four of those have been starts while three outings have come off the bench, though he was unused in the defeat to Bristol City on Friday.

Heckingbottom’s midfield ranks

Looking at the Preston North End midfield, it is an area they may well be looking to bolster heading into the summer.

Captain and star player Ben Whiteman penned a new deal last January so his future is not to be worried about, but Ryan Ledson’s current deal expires at the end of this season and there is little clarity over what the coming weeks and months hold.

Stefan Teitur Thordarson signed last summer, while Ali McCann is under contract for another two years.

Beyond them though, there’s little depth, so the signing of a top talent like Wright could be a welcome one.
