The Premier League has issued a statement clarifying just why Alejandro Garnacho's second-half goal against Leicester City was deemed offside.
Manchester United winger, Garnacho, thought he had extended Ruben Amorim's team's lead to 2-0, with the squad rushing towards the away end in celebration. However, the flag was eventually raised in a delayed call.
The Premier League Match Centre account on X (was Twitter) has now provided an explanation for the decision. "The referee's call of no goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR - with Garnacho in an offside position," they wrote on social media.
Despite that setback, Garnacho managed to score shortly afterwards - doubling United's advantage. Their captain Bruno Fernandes then polished off United's performance with a superb goal, bringing the score to 3-0 - and it was game, set and match for the Old Trafford giants.
It continued Leicester's horrific run of form with Ruud van Nistelrooy's men now staring relegation in the face. The Foxes have lost each of their last six home league games by an aggregate score of 15-0.
After Wolves beat Southampton 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, Leicester are now nine points from safety with nine games remaining. Next up is a tough run of fixtures against Manchester City, Newcastle, Brighton and champions elect Liverpool before the trip to Wolves.
Van Nistelrooy vowed his side will fight for survival until it's mathematically impossible, despite the alarming form. "It's about the mathematical possibility that is there," van Nistelrooy said.
"As long as that is the case, we are professionals and we keep doing our jobs. We can't and won't give up until it's mathematically impossible."
