Newcastle United's Brazilian midfielder #39 Bruno Guimaraes (C) and Newcastle United's English defender #02 Kieran Trippier
Newcastle United lifted the Carabao Cup trophy in style on Sunday afternoon - and there was one very special guest seen lofting the trophy above his head as the Magpies' faithful celebrated inside Wembley Stadium.
Jamaal Lascelles could be called the forgotten man at St James' Park. A long-serving captain of the club, he has been missing for the last 12 months due to a knee injury. However, the defender was invited to lift the Carabao Cup first after the 2-1 win over Liverpool.
Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier, Newcastle's current and former captain, respectively, were about to hoist the trophy above their head before the pair urged Lascelles to join them for the big moment. The centre-back obliged, in a heartwarming moment, as the trio all did the honours in front of a sea of black and white.
Lascelles is hoping to return to action in the coming weeks as he continues to recover from a nasty Anterior Cruciate Ligament [ACL] injury. However, with his future up in the air due to his expiring contract, it remains to be seen whether the wholesome Wembley moment is his last in a Newcastle shirt.
As for Bruno and Trippier, the pair very much impressed as Liverpool were put to the sword in style to end United's long-running and well-documented trophy drought in the capital. The Brazilian could not hold back the tears at full-time, as the emotions got the better of him and most still inside the stadium.
"I wanted to put my name in the club's history. We can now say we are the champions again!" Guimaraes told Sky Sports. "It is one of the best days of my life. I don't have any words. They [the fans] deserve it.
"People have grown up and not seen Newcastle as champions, I am so happy. This is one of the best days. We deserve this; it is unbelievable.
"This is my second home. Relegation, Champions League and now champions. I am so emotional today."
