Leeds United owners' Rangers takeover hopes could hit stumbling block amid promotion worry

Leeds United's owners, 49ers Enterprises, remain hopeful of completing a takeover of Scottish Premiership side Rangers. The 49ers group and chairman Paraag Marathe have reportedly been in talks with Ibrox club for months now to add the Scottish side into the ever growing collection of sports clubs from around the world.

The Americans are reportedly keen on talking over Rangers due to their access to the Champions League as well as seeing the Scottish league as one of the perfect place to develop new and young players who could potentially then end up at Leeds.

An agreement in principle was reached in March, according to reports, with Sky Sports News claiming a period of due diligence was set to take place.

However, their plans could hit a stumbling block according to The Sun. Reports have claimed that according to EFL regulations, a person or group cannot have ownership of more than one British club preventing the 49ers from being able to own both sides.

However, the Premier League has no such restrictions, meaning that if Leeds are able to hold their nerve and gain promotion this season - the Whites are top of the Championship table but only on goal difference - the deal can happily go ahead.

Some clubs and owners have managed to get around the rule with Burnley's connection to Dundee said to be seen as a collaboration and not joint ownership.

Rangers are reportedly open to a cash injection with the club limited after posting a £17.2 million loss last year. It meant that transfers have not been much of an option for the club, made just one loan move in January as rivals Celtic look to sweep up another treble.

Interim chairman John Gilligan revealed to shareholders back in December: "There is fresh investment coming into the club. The current investors have invested considerably over the years and are willing to do so again.

“We are open to anyone who approaches us on investment. We get approaches from all over the world from various sources. But it has to be the right people and the right conditions and for the right amount of shares."

It's not understood fully how the two clubs will link-up if Rangers also come under 49ers group ownership but fans can expect a similar operation to the City Group headed up Manchester City being the poster child for a group that includes, Girona, Palermo and Melbourne City.
