Ex-Newcastle star sold by Eddie Howe shows true feelings after Carabao Cup win

Elliot Anderson celebrates Newcastle's win

Former Newcastle star Elliot Anderson showed his true colours as he celebrated in the stands after the Magpies won the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley to lift their first major domestic trophy in 70 years and Anderson was in among the Toon supporters as they revelled in their historic victory.

Anderson is a boyhood Newcastle fan who joined the club at the age of eight and followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Geoff Allen, who also played for them in the 1960s before injury cut short his career.

However, Anderson left Newcastle over the summer, with the 22-year-old sold to Nottingham Forest as part of the club's attempts to avoid breaking the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Despite his departure, Anderson was delighted with Newcastle's Carabao Cup triumph and could be seen gesturing towards manager Eddie Howe, assistant Jason Tindall and goalkeeper Nick Pope as the team celebrated in front of the fans at full-time.

Howe, Tindall and Pope all appeared to recognise Anderson among the crowd and gestured back to him. Howe has previously admitted he did not want to sell Anderson to Forest, but the club felt they had to in order to avoid a potential points deduction.

"The last thing we want to do, or I want to do as the manager of the club, is to sell academy products who have the potential to play for this team for many years," he said in January when asked about the club's financial concerns.

Anderson had starred in Nottingham Forest's win over Ipswich less than 24 hours earlier

"Elliot was a case in point - it was the last sale we wanted to make. We knew his qualities and he had just broken into the team towards the back end of last season. He had performed really well in a variety of roles for us.

"But we were faced with literally no other option in that moment with 48 hours to go, we had to make a decision that we did not want to make. It will always be our last choice to do that. But, when you add up everything together and you go, 'Well, it's a points deduction and breaching PSR or making a sale, I think you have to make the sale'."

Although Anderson may have missed out on Newcastle's Carabao Cup final win, he is enjoying an outstanding debut campaign at Forest. Forest currently sit third in the Premier League and are set to qualify for next season's Champions League.
