Successful Close Protection Missions by ITS FEDERICO MARTINENGO and HS HYDRA

ITS FEDERICO MARTINENGO and HS HYDRA have each completed multiple successful close protection missions to merchant vessels in the area of operation, under the EUNAVFOR ASPIDES Operation. These missions ensure the safety and security of vital maritime trade routes in the region, contributing to global economic stability and the freedom of navigation.
Medals Awarded to Operational Personnel

On January 28, aboard the flagship ITS Caio Duilio 🇮🇹 in Djibouti, operational personnel were awarded the prestigious EUNAVFOR ASPIDES Medal for their exceptional dedication and service. The medals were presented by the Deputy Commander and the Force Commander of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, recognizing their continuous efforts in supporting the operation’s objectives.
Key Diplomatic Engagements with Djibouti Authorities

On January 29 and 30, the Deputy Commander of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, accompanied by the Ambassador of the European Union to Djibouti and the Force Commander, held important meetings with Djiboutian authorities. They engaged with the Chief of the Military Cabinet of the Presidency, the Chief of the Djiboutian Navy, the Chief of the Djiboutian Coast Guard, and the Chairman of the Djibouti Ports & Free Zones Authority. These discussions were an excellent opportunity to strengthen regional cooperation, share perspectives on de-escalation, and reduce tensions in the area.
Leadership Change at EUNAVFOR ASPIDES

On February 2, aboard the Italian flagship Federico Martinengo, the command of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES was formally transferred from Commodore Konstantinos Pitykakis (Hellenic Navy) to Commodore Michail Pantouvakis (Hellenic Navy). This transition was marked by a ceremony attended by Operation Commander, Rear Admiral Vasileios Gryparis (Hellenic Navy), and other key personnel. Commodore Pitykakis’ leadership has been instrumental in advancing the EU’s commitment to protecting the freedom of navigation, seafarers' lives, and global common goods.
Operational Engagements and Diplomatic Outreach

Rear Admiral Vasileios Gryparis (EL N), Commander of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, attended the annual EU Ambassadors Conference in Brussels on February 7. During this event, ambassadors from EU delegations worldwide discussed key aspects of EU foreign affairs and security policy. Rear Admiral Gryparis highlighted the positive achievements of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES and discussed the complementarity of military action with EU diplomatic and political efforts in ensuring security and crisis management.

Later in February, the Commander also met with senior Italian officials, including the Chief of Defence of the Italian Armed Forces, General Luciano Portolano, and Undersecretary of Defence, Hon. Matteo Perego di Cremnago. These meetings allowed for discussions on Italy’s invaluable contribution to the operation and provided valuable insights into the current operational environment.
Maritime Surveillance Demonstration and Regional Cooperation

On February 20, Rear Admiral Gryparis presented the current status of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES during the Maritime Surveillance (MARSUR) Demonstration in Rome. MARSUR, a technical solution initiated by the European Defence Agency (EDA), facilitates interconnection among European maritime information systems to improve situational awareness and cooperation.
Strengthening Ties with Djiboutian Authorities

On March 6, Force Commander Commodore Michail Pantouvakis (EL-N) met with Captain Ahmed Daher Djama, the Chief of the Djiboutian Navy. Their discussion focused on strengthening the existing cooperation between EUNAVFOR ASPIDES and Djibouti, further enhancing regional maritime security efforts.
