Four criminal investigations were initiated against Mikhail Saakashvili, now a Ukrainian citizen, after he left Georgia in 2013. In two of these cases, he was sentenced in absentia to three and six years in prison. On March 12, a court convicted Saakashvili of embezzling over $3.2 million in state funds, sentencing him to nine years in prison. The cases related to the dispersal of an opposition rally on November 7, 2007, and the destruction of the Imedi TV station’s office are still ongoing. In May 2022, the former Georgian president was transferred to the Viamed private clinic in Tbilisi due to his deteriorating health, where he remains under care.
