Alan Shearer posts drunken message rubbing salt firmly into Liverpool wounds

Alan Shearer didn’t hold back with his drunken assessment of Newcastle United’s victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. The Magpies defeated the Premier League champions-elect 2-1 at Wembley on Sunday to end a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

It was a match that Newcastle dominated from the first whistle, with goals on either side of the break from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak proving the difference for Eddie Howe’s side. Federico Chiesa did come off the bench to net what proved to be nothing more than a consolation goal in added time, as Newcastle held firm to confirm themselves as the cup winners.

Unsurprisingly, it sparked scenes of celebration at Wembley, where former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer was in attendance to watch his team end their silverware drought. The 54-year-old was spotted in the crowd taking in the festivities, with the Englishman taking to social media sometime after the final whistle to share his verdict.

Blasting the performance of Newcastle’s cup final opponents, Shearer wrote on X, he said: “I know I’m p****d but ……. Liverpool are a great club and will win the league and have been brilliant this season but the Geordies absolutely smashed them today and deserved it.”

For Shearer, winning a trophy with his boyhood club was something he wasn’t able to achieve. But for Burn, another North East native, things couldn’t be more different. Reacting to the victory at full-time, the defender replied: "I've had worse weeks. I don't want to go to sleep because I feel like I'm dreaming and it's all going to be a lie. I feel strange, I feel numb at the minute.”

On his goal, he added: "I knew Alexis Mac Allister wasn't looking at the ball and I'd be able to get a jump on him. I don't get many so I saved it for a big occasion.”

Meanwhile, Bruno Guimaraes stated, while referencing Shearer: "It's all for these fans. They deserve everything. When I first came here I said I wanted to put my name in history. We can now say we are the champions again. This is one of the best days of my life…

"This is my second home. We are making history. Some day when I leave this club I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to [former player Alan] Shearer. He texted me before the game. I'm so emotional today."
