The Alexander Isak statement Newcastle United fans will love hearing after winning Carabao Cup…

Newcastle United have won a trophy.

After a 70-year long wait for a major domestic honour, Newcastle United are Carabao Cup champions.

Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 to win a Carabao Cup final they largely dominated. Federico Chiesa’s late reply to goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak threatened to set-up a grandstand finish but Eddie Howe’s side saw it out.

Losing after such a dominant display would have been cruel and little about what Liverpool did throughout around 100 minutes of action ever suggested they would win, but we all know football doesn’t work that way.

However, the full-time whistle brought with it two major emotions. Jubilation and relief. The weight of history no longer feels so heavy.

Isak’s goal was really the icing on the cake. Minutes after he’d had one disallowed by VAR, the Sweden striker swept home a fine finish to put Newcastle into a significant lead.

Alexander Isak sends statement Newcastle United fans will want to hear

So much has been made about the forward’s future but nights like Sunday will surely go some way into convincing him to stay.

Liverpool want to sign Isak but he’s still got three years to run on his contract. Now at a trophy-winning team challenging for Champions League qualification, there would appear to be little to reason to leave.

It has frankly been quite irritating reading so much about Isak’s future considering he’s given no outward indication he wants to leave.

After winning the Carabao Cup, the forward claimed this was just the “start” for the club.

Alexander Isak: "This is really just the start. We will see more from the fans and what it means for the people when we get back to Newcastle.

"We are all aware of how long it's been for the fans without a trophy." pic.twitter.com/vrbRAPAMIj

Such has been the level of his form this season, Isak has been hailed as “world class”. It is hard to doubt that.

An absolutely brilliant striker capable of creating magic against any team in the world, the Sweden star is a Newcastle legend.

There can be little doubt about that. This is only the start for Isak at the club.

Long may it continue.
