‘It’s disrespectful’ – Ex-EFL man delivers verdict on Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones after …

Ex-Football League defender Adam Virgo believes the football community can be ‘disrespectful’ to Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones.

Charlton Athletic’s manager worked wonders during his time at Luton Town. However, CAFC’s head coach struggled to make an impact at both Southampton and Stoke City.

Jones, 51, has done an impressive job since taking over the Addicks. His side are currently eyeing promotion to the Championship.

Former Brighton and Hove Albion and Bristol Rovers defender Virgo has written in the Football League Paper (page 39, 16.03.25): “I want him to succeed because I’ve never seen someone so focussed or driven. He never switches off, not for a moment, and he’s so passionate about what he does.

“It really frustrates me that so many people look at his record at Southampton or Stoke and kind of use it to mock him. There’s this narrative that he was out of his depth and isn’t really a very good manager. It’s disrespectful.

“He’s got an amazing body of work at Luton and the way Charlton are playing now only backs up the point. He’s a top, top manager who works as hard as anyone and it would be great to see him back in the Championship.”

Charlton Athletic have been in fine form over recent times and are aiming to get promoted.

They are five points off the top two with nine fixtures left to play this season.

Charlton Athletic are on a roll and won 2-1 at home to Wigan Athletic over the weekend after two goals by striker Matty Godden.

The London outfit have lost only once in their last 13 matches and that was to league leaders Birmingham City.

Jones took over back in February and has since won 46% of games in charge.

He has had two successful stints at Luton Town in the past but has had to drop down into the third tier to boost his reputation again after tricky tenures with Stoke City and Southampton.

Charlton Athletic are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Peterborough United.

They then lock horns with Huddersfield Town in their final fixture of March.
