Report: Chelsea think they're about to sign another Moises Caicedo who could provide cover for the Ecuadorian next season

The summer transfer window is not open yet, but Chelsea are already making moves in the market.

Chelsea are set to sign Geovany Quenda from Sporting Lisbon as they look to add another wide player to their squad.

Enzo Maresca already has Noni Madueke, Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho, Mykhailo Mudryk and Tyrique George at his disposal, while Estevao Willian is also set to become an option for him next season.

However, the opportunity to sign Quenda was clearly too good to turn down, with Chelsea refusing to stop there.

Chelsea see similarities between Dario Essugo and Moises Caicedo

On top of Quenda, Chelsea are also about to snap up another Sporting youngster, Dario Essugo, who is currently on loan at Las Palmas.

It is being reported that Chelsea have also agreed to sign Essugo from Sporting as the Blues continue to build for the future.

According to GiveMeSport, Chelsea view Essugo as a ball-winning midfielder with similar qualities to Moises Caicedo, who they feel needs more cover next season.

At 20, Essugo is still quite young. It will be a while before Stamford Bridge sees the Portuguese at his peak.

However, it is thought that Essugo will be part of Chelsea’s first team for the 2025/26 campaign. It will now be interesting to see where that leaves Andrey Santos.

Santos is having an excellent loan spell at Strasbourg and is expected to return to west London in the summer. But Essugo’s arrival will mean even more competition for the Brazilian.

Moises Caicedo’s number of appearances this season

Caicedo has played a lot of football for Chelsea this term, perhaps even too much.

The 23-year-old is yet to miss a Premier League game under Maresca so far, starting in all 29 of Chelsea’s top-flight fixtures.

He even played in the Blues’ Conference League match against Copenhagen last week, showing just how much Maresca relies on him.

Moises Caicedo’s 2024/25 season Appearances Minutes

Premier League 29 2,546

Conference League 2 124

Conference League qualifiers 2 111

FA Cup 1 90

Total 34 2,871

Without rest, Caicedo is at real risk of burning out or getting injured, which is why Essugo coming in and rotating with the Ecuador international could be very good news for him.
