Dan Burn scored Newcastle United’s first goal at Wembley for 25 years as they beat Liverpool to win the Carabao Cup.
The wait is finally over. Newcastle United’s trophy drought has come to an end.
After the agony of 2023 against Manchester United, 2025 was perfection for the Toon Army. Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 to win the Carabao Cup, with every member of Eddie Howe’s squad making history.
That includes Dan Burn, who opened the scoring at Wembley in the first half.
He climbed highest to get on the end of Kieran Trippier’s corner, with the Geordie defender scoring Newcastle’s first goal at Wembley since Rob Lee in 2000.
There could not have been a more fitting goalscorer, as the Magpies went on to end their 70 year wait for a domestic trophy.

The perfect few days for Newcastle United’s cup hero
The past few days could not have gone much better for Dan Burn.
As anticipation built for the final, the 32-year-old received some incredible news.
On Friday, Burn was named in the England squad – Thomas Tuchel’s first since being named as Three Lions boss.
Tuchel chose Burn for his versatility, while the giant defender had probably given up all hope of representing his country.
Now he could get that opportunity in England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers, and he will go into the camp as a League Cup winner and a Newcastle United legend.
