Sergio Ramos was hammered by an ex Celtic player after being sent off for kicking an opponent during Mexican football match.

The Real Madrid legend and World Cup winner was sent off in the final minutes of Monterrey's 3-1 victory over Pumas UNAM on Sunday.

The 38 year old was challenging for the ball with Guillermo Martinez before needlessly kicking out. He then pleaded his innocence despite the incident taking place yards away from the linesman.

It marks his first dismissal since he moved to Liga MX last month, where he got off to a great start by scoring three goals in just five matches.

It is the 30th red card of Ramos' career. He was dismissed 28 times for Madrid and once for Sevilla, although he was never sent off for Spain.

Rival Pumas coach, and former Celtic defender, Efrain Juarez was left fuming after the game and claims Ramos should have been sent off for ANOTHER incident earlier in the match.

He said: "I'm not going to address any questions regarding the refereeing decisions, but I do want to highlight a crucial point that goes beyond just frustration and sadness.

"As a foreign player in this league, one is expected to set an example. Protecting our Mexican football is vital.

"I believe their captain should have received a red card in the 20th minute. No matter his name, he is expected to be a role model on the field.

"If one of our players had done the same, he would have been dismissed by the 20th minute, instead of waiting until the 90th minute to leave the pitch."

The incident involving Ramos' elbow came after Pablo Bennevendo praised the Los Blancos legend in the pre-match press conference, adding that he would include him in his list of five best defenders in football's history.

Juarez added: "These behaviours do not align with my values, and I cannot condone them in our football culture. Everyone knows exactly who I am referring to."

Meanwhile, after the match, Ramos appeared to poke fun at his dismissal. Taking to X, he wrote: "Very important win away from home against a difficult team. Time to rest and prepare what’s next.

"P.S.: It was obvious I couldn’t leave this league without a red card. +3 and onwards!"

Juarez joined the Hoops in 2010 for a fee of £2m from Pumas but only made 13 appearances in two seasons before heading back to Mexico to sign with Club America.
