Arsenal and Chelsea ahead of Liverpool in race for Serie A star

Arsenal kept alive their slim chances of winning the Premier League title by beating London rivals Chelsea 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Mikel Merino’s first-half goal was enough to earn the Gunners a crucial victory at The Emirates, moving Mikel Arteta’s side to within 12 points of leaders Liverpool.

The defeat means the Blues remain fourth in the top flight standings, although they are just one point above fifth-placed Manchester City in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Away from the action, though, it appears that Chelsea have leapfrogged a Premier League rival in the race to sign a Serie A star.

Football Insider claims that both Arsenal and Chelsea have moved ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Inter Milan forward Marcus Thuram.

The report claims that the two London side have leapfrogged the Reds in their pursuit of the Frenchman, who has been in fine form this season.

Thuram has attracted interest from several clubs

Thuram, 27, has scored 16 goals in 38 matches for Inter across all competitions so far this term.

His impressive form has attracted interest from a number of clubs, including the Gunners, the Blues and the Reds.

The France international’s current contract with Inter is set to run until 2028 and – while the Italian side are attempting to agree an extension with the player – the report claims that there is a £71 million release clause in the current deal.

Thuram joined Inter from German side Borussia Monchengladbach in 2023 and has since registered a combined 43 goals and assists in 84 matches across all competitions.

He has scored 26 goals in 63 Serie A matches, and his tally of 13 league goals so far this term has helped put his side on course to win the top flight title.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal have struggled with injuries to key attacking players this season, and it appears that the two sides are now on the hunt for attacking reinforcements.
