Alan Shearer was noticeably absent from the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast after Newcastle's famous Carabao Cup triumph.

The Newcastle United legend, 54, had far more pressing matters at Wembley, where he witnessed his beloved Magpies finally break their seven-decade-long trophy drought and in style. A thrilling 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final saw Eddie Howe's squad carve their names into the history books, with Dan Burn and Alexander Isak delivering the goals that secured an unforgettable triumph.

Federico Chiesa's late strike barely registered beyond the match report, as Newcastle at last ended their 70-year wait for silverware with a performance befitting such a momentous occasion. Shearer was seen celebrating wildly in the stands at the final whistle, and, according to Gary Lineker, he didn't stop there, spending much of the night revelling alongside the players.

"Alan's had an incredible day at Wembley. Needless to say, he won’t be joining the pod since we’re recording this on Sunday evening," Lineker laughed.

"I think he's at the party, possibly with the players, definitely surrounded by plenty of fans... Brilliant scenes, what a day Alan has had. I'm so happy for all the Newcastle supporters. I know it's a tough one for Liverpool and their fans, but they've lifted plenty of silverware in recent years, whereas Newcastle has waited an eternity for this. And my word, they earned it. I thought they were absolutely outstanding."

Newcastle were the stronger side throughout the contest, despite having just 34 per cent of possession. They created the better chances and even had a second-half goal ruled out for offside.

It was fitting that local lad Burn broke the deadlock, with half of Wembley erupting as the Blyth-born defender powered in a thunderous header from a corner just before half-time. After the match, Liverpool boss Arne Slot admitted: "I've never seen a player that far out head a ball with so much force straight into the far corner.

"Ninety-nine times out of 100, that wouldn’t result in a goal. Fair play to him, he's one of the rare players who can score from that distance with his head."

Just seven minutes after the interval, Isak doubled Newcastle's advantage, guiding the ball into the net from close range after a well-placed knockdown by Jacob Murphy. The 2-0 deficit finally sparked some urgency in Liverpool, and Howe's men found themselves under increasing pressure in the final 30 minutes.

It wasn't until Chiesa's 94th-minute strike that the Newcastle defence was breached, and what followed was pure torture for the Toon Army - eight agonizing minutes of nail-biting tension. Every clearance, every tackle, every tick of the clock felt like an eternity.

Then, at long last, John Brooks' whistle shattered the tension, igniting an eruption of relief, ecstasy, and sheer unfiltered jubilation from the stands.

The victory did more than just erase 70 years of waiting - it obliterated a long-standing hoodoo, handing Newcastle their first final victory after five previous heartbreaks. Shearer himself had endured the sting of defeat twice, suffering back-to-back FA Cup final losses to Arsenal and Manchester United in 1998 and 1999.

But on this unforgettable night, those bitter memories were finally consigned to history. Like thousands of other Geordies, Shearer soaked it all in - this time, with pure, unrestrained elation - as his boyhood club finally hoisted a trophy.
