**PHOENIX (AZFamily)** —Sports fans can watch a game on television or listen to a game on the radio. And now, the Suns are bringing games in downtown Phoenix to life in a whole new way—a tactile broadcast—giving fans who are blind or have low vision a way to watch with their hands.
Twelve-year-old Chris Lopez has been a Suns fan for as long as he can remember, falling in line with the rest of his family. But Chris couldn’t follow along with them at games because he is blind. “When they would be like, ‘oohhh!’ I would be like, ‘what happened?’” he recalls. “Now, I can be like, ‘oh yes!’ at the same time with them, with this device. So it’s game-changing, it’s really cool.”
The device is a tablet made by the Seattle-based startup OneCourt. It takes NBA tracking data and converts it into vibrations.
“The data that we’re using – the ball tracking, the player tracking – it’s always been used before for analytics, for betting, for player training,” says Antyush Bollini, OneCourt co-founder and COO. “And now we’re repurposing that and creating a new type of broadcast.”
Users of the device can feel the court where the ball is in real-time by following the vibrations on the tablet (which is a model of a basketball court), with a unique number of vibrations on the tablet’s hoops that indicate when a basket is made, and whether it was a free throw, a two-pointer, or a three-pointer. OneCourt also uses generative audio to fill in some of the gaps, like what the score is and how much time is left.
The Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation and Ticketmaster partnered with OneCourt to bring ten devices to the arena. The devices are available to check out free of charge at Guest Services for each home game. The Suns are the third NBA team to partner with OneCourt, joining the Portland TrailBlazers and Sacramento Kings.
