Liverpool could be handed an ideal Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement following reports that Jeremie Frimpong has a release clause in his Bayer Leverkusen. The England international is facing an uncertain future at Anfield with some resigned to losing the academy graduate amid interest from Real Madrid.

Los Blancos have taken a keen interest in the Liverpool star with the 26-year-old into the final six months of his contract at Anfield. Frimpong has been in fine form for the Bundesliga side and played a key role in their German league triumph last season, reports suggest that he has a release clause in his deal and could be available for €40million (around £33.6m).

The Reds have seen their options at full-back exposed with Alexander-Arnold picking up an ankle injury during the midweek Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain - joining deputy right-back Conor Bradley, who has been absent since the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa last month.

This summer has been dubbed an important one for Arne Slot's side after the Dutchman welcomed just one new addition during his first two transfer windows. Despite sitting 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League, there are several departments touted for reinforcements in the summer.

As the future of Alexander-Arnold remains uncertain, Frimpong has been tipped as a possible replacement after his impressive performances at Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso.

"Jeremie Frimpong remains one to watch in the summer, one more goal + assist performance on Sunday," Fabrizio Romano tweeted. "Dutch RB could leave Leverkusen in the summer with many clubs interested.

"The clause into his contract is worth around €40m."

The 24-year-old previously revealed that he wanted to join Liverpool, prior to completing his move to Manchester City. He said: “There were scouts there like Liverpool, Bolton, Man City and a lot more.

"I chose Liverpool first. I was going to sign for them but back then, driving wasn’t a thing. My family wasn’t driving and it was far.

"Obviously, Man City was local, so I tried Man City next, and then it made more sense. It was 15 minutes on the bus, so yeah."
