Graham Potter makes strange 'new stadium' excuse after West Ham collapse against Everton

Everton will take the point against West Ham considering it wasn’t the best of performances since David Moyes has returned.

Jake O’Brien saved Everton’s unbeaten run as Moyes’ side are now nine games without defeat.

They didn’t make it easy and Abdoulaye Doucoure didn’t help matters for Everton after a dismal showing.

Nevertheless, it’s another point closer to safety for the Toffees and Moyes can probably start planning out next season’s aspirations.

Moyes applauded the West Ham fans as his respect for the club is still there, and Graham Potter kind of did the same, but in a strange manner.

Graham Potter makes ‘new stadium’ excuse after Everton draw

Potter will of course be happy his side didn’t lose as in the end, a draw was probably the fair result.

However, Carlos Alcaraz had the golden opportunity to remarkably give the Toffees three points, as Moyes won’t use Alcaraz on the wing again.

The Everton boss will be happy with the three points but the sad reality is Goodison Park is edging ever closer to its exit, and Potter believes that is why his West Ham side collapsed on Saturday.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Potter said: “We needed that second goal because Everton make it difficult for you with the atmosphere here.

“The situation with them moving to a new stadium, and not so many games left at Goodison (played its part).

“So the crowd got involved and it’s hard to control. So I feel for the players because they gave everything, but in the end, we have to take our medicine and take the point.”

Potter’s claim on Goodison could be proven right for Everton

It’s a strange excuse to put the draw down to, but the Hammers boss isn’t entirely wrong.

The West Ham manager himself might be frustrated as Potter rejected Everton, meaning the atmosphere could’ve been on his side.

But his claim is correct, as with only four games left at Goodison, Moyes will want to make it a farewell to remember, making Everton difficult to beat.

Their form in itself is good enough, but a revamped Goodison is the last thing travelling teams need, as Evertonians hope to bow out in style.
