Another former LSU All-American Signs Record Breaking Deal

On Monday morning, former LSU Tiger All-American cornerback, Derek Stingley Jr., signed a record breaking deal with the Houston Texans.

Derek Stingley is now the highest-paid DB in NFL history after signing a three-year, 90 million dollar deal with the Texans, which also sees him get 89 million guaranteed.

Stingley played three seasons at LSU and cemented himself as one of the best DBs in school history, which is really saying something considering all the talent that has walked through the building. As a true freshman in 2019, he was the Tigers' CB1 in their national championship run, earning consensus All-American honors. In 2020, he was once again named a First-Team All-American after a terrific sophomore season. He entered his name into the 2022 NFL Draft after his junior season - which was cut short due to a foot injury - and was selected third overall by the Texans.

Stingley had some troubles as a rookie, but started to settle in during the 2023 season where he allowed a 54.2% completion percentage when targeted and picked off five passes. However, 2024 was the year where he proved he was worth the third overall pick.

Despite playing man-to-man most of the time, Stingley allowed a 45.3% completion percentage and three touchdowns while picking off seven passes and breaking up 11 more. He was named a First-Team All-Pro and led the Texans to the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

He was the best cornerback in football in 2024 and now he's getting paid like so. There's no reason for Houston to believe Stingley won't continue to play at this high of a level, and with other young CBs like Sauce Gardner yet to be paid, they got ahead of the eight ball and likely saved a few millions.
