Dan Burn of Newcastle United celebrates scoring his team's first goal during the Carabao Cup Final
Graeme Jones, one of few in Newcastle's squad to have transcended the pre and post-takeover era, couldn't hide his delight after watching his club defeat Liverpool to lift the Carabao Cup. Not only was this a trophy hoodoo-ending win, this was a win in which Dan Burn - the boy from Blyth - grabbed the headlines.
"Callum Wilson said after the game to Dan: 'If Carlsberg did careers...' then this is it for Dan, scoring the goal in a cup final then linking up with England tomorrow," Jones told reporters before exiting Wembley.
Burn's week indeed started with whispers he was going to be called up to Thomas Tuchel's maiden England squad. Despite becoming a regular in Eddie Howe's high-flying Newcastle side, few expected the former Darlington and Yeovil star to be awarded his debut international shout at the age of 32.
Yet not content with just the one accolade in an already momentous week, Burn decided to go one better. The boyhood Newcastle fan, who believed his dream of pulling on black and white was done and dusted when the 2021 takeover was announced, rising highest to head his club into the lead on the biggest stage of them all.
It is the stuff of fairytales. A dream turned into reality. As Wilson put it, you could scarcely have written the type of week Burn has enjoyed.
"I don't want to go to sleep because I feel like I'm dreaming and it's all going to be a lie," Burn told Sky Sports in the moments after the emphatic win."I don't get many so I saved it for a big occasion. I feel strange, I feel numb at the minute."
Burn, ever the professional, insists he will be one of the first to arrive at England training this week as he begins life as an international. The coming days will no doubt feel like a fever dream for the Newcastle defender as it sinks in that he has made Magpies history over the weekend.
