Following Newcastle United’s historic victory in the Carabao Cup against Liverpool FC on March 16th, Sam Fender paid tribute to his hometown football club during his concert in Berlin.

The 2-1 win at Wembley Stadium saw Newcastle pick up their first major domestic trophy in 70 years thanks to goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak. Although touring commitments prevented Fender from being there in person to celebrate the triumph, he made sure to paint Berlin black and white during his show at the Uber Eats Music Hall.

Fender, along with the rest of his band, wore Newcastle shirts for the special performance. They also walked onto the stage to the sounds of Mark Knopfler’s ‘Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero’, which is the song that Newcastle walk out to at every game at St James’ Park.

When playing ‘Little Bit Closer’ later in the set, Fender altered the lyrics from “I never found him” to “His name is Dan Burn,” in celebration of Newcastle’s local goalscorer.

On Instagram, Fender also wrote about the victory alongside an image of him crying: “Best day ever. We deserved it. 70 years. The clock has been reset. Howay the lads.”

Fender’s name along with his album, People Watching, was printed on the back of Newcastle shirts during the match following a collaboration. Initially, it was set to only occur for their match against Brentford in the quarter-final, but the club chose to keep wearing the good-luck charm for the rest of their cup campaign.

This summer, Fender will bring People Watching to St James’ Park for three huge shows in June. He’ll be joined by The War On Drugs and CMAT for the set of performances. He previously performed two concerts at the stadium in 2023, and will now make history by becoming the artist to have played St James’ on the most occasions.
