Kieran Trippier has admitted he was ‘fuming’ with Bruno Guimaraes during Newcastle United’s League Cup final victory over Liverpool. The Brazilian was one of the Magpies’ star performers as goals either side of half-time from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak earned them a 2-1 win.

However, the Reds scored a stoppage-time consolation through Federico Chiesa to set up a nervy finish after Harvey Elliott stole possession from Guimaraes and played in the Italian.

Speaking to CBS Sports after the final whistle, Trippier shared his frustration with Guimaraes at the time as he joked he would ‘have strangled him’ if Liverpool had scored an equaliser.

"I was fuming! I was fuming. I was fuming,” he said. “In moments like this, it's about game management. Just one single pass and he's through on goal.

“But can't blame Bruno, he's been unbelievable for us… I would have strangled him."

It was from Trippier’s corner that Burn opened the scoring, with the centre-back heading home across goal from the far post after towering over Alexis Mac Allister in a mismatched battle.

And the former England international admitted his surprise that Liverpool didn’t change their set-up during the game as he explained how Newcastle looked to keep both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk quiet.

“We work a lot at set plays and Van Dijk’s their biggest threat,” Trippier said. “He was always in the middle of the goal so there was a chance to exploit the back post. Sometimes it came off. To be fair I’m surprised Liverpool didn’t change.

“We talked about it a lot, you have to be brave, go man for man at times. Of course we had to push Tino (Livramento) on and put Burny on Salah. Burny’s a big threat and Salah’s so good at controlling he ball, it’s just about fine margins.

“Salah’s one of the best in the world and you have to try and limit Van Dijk, the big diagonal he always does to Salah, try and stop their threats.

“Liverpool are an unbelievable side. But we played well and I thought we matched them man for man.”

Pundit Micah Richards would also later reveal that Trippier had told him how Newcastle tweaked their usual set-pieces to get the better of Liverpool and Van Dijk in particular.

Meanwhile, with plenty being said about Mac Allister finding himself up against his former Brighton team-mate, Burn, at set-pieces, the centre-back talked Sky Sports through his goal after the final whistle.

“I knew Alexis wasn’t looking at the ball and I’d be able to get a jump on him,” he said. “I don’t get many [goals] so I saved it for a big occasion. I feel sometimes I get around bodies and it’s tough to get free.”
