Israel has a long history of research collaboration with the EU. It has participated in the Framework Programmes for research and innovation since 1996, and in 2021 [signed an agreement to join Horizon Europe](https://research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/news/all-research-and-innovation-news/israel-joins-horizon-europe-research-and-innovation-programme-2021-12-06_en).
Despite [tensions following Israel’s attack](https://sciencebusiness.net/news/universities/academic-boycotts-over-gaza-war-jeopardise-israels-place-horizon-europe) on Gaza in response to the Hamas assault in October 2023, collaboration continues at a strong pace. Since that date, some 130 Horizon Europe research projects involving Israeli researchers have been approved for funding.
