Bayern Munich have contacted the agent of Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk to open preliminary talks over a potential free transfer.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the German giants have emerged as “serious contenders” for the 33-year-old in what amounts to a bombshell for the Anfield faithful.

However, the ultimate decision will come from Van Dijk as he weighs up whether he wants to continue competing in the Premier League with Liverpool.

This comes after Football Insider revealed in February that Liverpool and Van Dijk have made little progress towards agreeing a new deal despite the Reds’ desire to reach an agreement.

As things stand, he will be able to leave Anfield for free in June, while foreign clubs have been able to speak to his representatives about a pre-contract deal since January.

Bayern, meanwhile, are looking to strengthen their squad as they aim to win the Bundesliga and Champions League, with Van Dijk’s availability making him a key target.

Bayern Munich join Real Madrid in race to sign Virgil van Dijk

Brown previously told Football Insider that Real Madrid are watching Van Dijk’s contract situation closely as they eye a potential swoop for his signature.

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, explained that the defender will have to make the final decision about his future.

“Bayern Munich have emerged as serious contenders for Van Dijk,” he told Football Insider.

“They’re speaking to his agent and seeing whether he would be interested in that move.

“Ultimately, I think money talks.

“They’ll look at what Harry Kane has done over there since moving away from the Premier League and how well he has performed.

“In comparison to the Premier League, it would be a relatively comfortable move for him to make.

“He could go there, without the pressure that comes with playing for Liverpool and playing in the Premier League, and just enjoy playing his game.

“But there’s no doubt, if you leave Liverpool and the Premier League to go anywhere else, it’s a step down.

“It will be up to him to decide whether he makes that move away or stays and competes with Liverpool because no decision has been made yet.”

Liverpool eye deals for Marc Guehi and Dean Huijsen

As speculation about Van Dijk’s future continues to grow, Liverpool have turned their attention to recruiting a new centre-back in the summer window.

Brown told Football Insider on 13 March that Liverpool are targeting Marc Guehi and Dean Huijsen as their top primary options for the position.

Guehi’s experience with both Crystal Palace, where he is the club captain, and with England have made him a target while he is expected to make a move this summer.

Huijsen, meanwhile, has enjoyed a stellar first season with Bournemouth, and has a £55million release clause in his contract which has put interest clubs on high alert.
