Newcastle United star Dan Burn awarded Freedom of Northumberland

Dan Burn, from Blyth, is set to receive another honour after playing a major role in Newcastle United's Carabao Cup Final victory.

Dan Burn, the Newcastle United defender who scored the team's first goal in their Carabao Cup Final victory, is set to be awarded the Freedom of Northumberland.

The 32-year-old was born in Blyth and grew up supporting the Magpies.

He has now written himself into Newcastle United history, with a terrific header to put the team in front just before half-time, and also picking up the Player of the Match award.

This all came at the end of a week in which he received his first England call-up from new head coach Thomas Tuchel.

Now, Burn has another honour to add to the list, as he is being nominated to receive the Freedom of Northumberland, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reports.

Northumberland County Council describe the honour "as recognition of significant and valuable services rendered to the county".

Following a spell with Newcastle's academy as a child, Burn played youth football for local clubs Blyth Town, Blyth Spartans and New Hartley.

Announcing the nomination, Northumberland County Council leader Glen Sanderson said: “It’s a great victory for the region and the fact a local lad played such a crucial part in this journey is wonderful.

"As a season ticket holder for over 30 years, I’m extremely proud, not only of this achievement, but that someone from our county has been a part of it.

“I’m sure it’s a dream come true for Dan, who’s also had his first England call-up, and I believe this will inspire our young people to achieve their dreams. I intend to nominate Dan for the highest honour we can bestow; the Freedom of Northumberland.”

Burn is not the first footballer to get this honour though, earlier this year Berwick-born Lucy Bronze was given the title in recognition of her achievements with the England women's team.
