Newcastle’s cup final triumph has been hailed as a “historic moment for the North East and for Geordies everywhere”.

The region’s leaders have heaped praise on Eddie Howe and his team, after goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sealed a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final. That victory sparked wild scenes of celebration from Magpies fans around the world, ending a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy to return to St James’ Park.

Chi Onwurah, the Labour MP for Newcastle Central and West, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that she was “overwhelmed with admiration and gratitude for the team's performance” and that “through talent and determination they overturned decades of disappointment to light Wembley with Geordie joy”. She added: “They went in the underdogs, but they were the masters on the night and they should know that the impact of their win will be felt in our homes and our hearts far into the future. It is the Toon's time. Howay the lads!”

Newcastle City Council leader Karen Kilgour, a season ticket holder who was among the legions of NUFC fans at Sunday’s match, said that there were “no words to describe how I feel right now” following a dominant display to end decades of Wembley pain. Coun Kilgour said: “Huge congratulations to Eddie Howe and the team for a tenacious and inspiring performance in London and making our city so proud. The Magpies turned Wembley black and white.

"This team will now go down in Newcastle United history. I'm sure this is the first of many more trophies coming to St James’ Park. Newcastle United is a massive club with huge ambitions, and I’m sure this is just the start of great things for Newcastle.”

North East mayor Kim McGuinness, who watched the game from home as she continues her recovery from surgery to remove her appendix, reserved particular praise for local hero Burn – a Blyth native whose cup final heroics came just a couple of days after winning his first England call-up at the age of 32. The mayor said: “What a historic moment for the North East and for Geordies everywhere. My congratulations to the team and everyone at Newcastle United – you did us all proud.

“There’s a real buzz in the air today and this one is a win for kids right across the region who got to see homegrown talent like Dan Burn, score in a cup final and go on to win. To finally lift the cup after a 70-year wait is a phenomenal achievement. This is a huge day for Newcastle and thoroughly well deserved – Howay the lads!”

Rob Higgins, Newcastle’s lord mayor, was also part of the Toon Army that descended on the national stadium. He called the win a “brilliant result and great for the city”, adding that he could promise the team a “great reception on their return”.

Colin Ferguson, who leads Newcastle’s Liberal Democrat opposition, has urged the council to put on a civic reception to celebrate the club’s historic achievement in delivering a first trophy since the 1960s and the first domestic silverware since 1955.

Coun Ferguson said: “This is a fantastic achievement by the team, and a great day for everyone in the city. To not only return a trophy to Newcastle, but to do it in a competition that hasn’t been won by a team outside of Liverpool or Manchester in the last ten years, is a testament to their efforts. The best way to bring everyone together to celebrate is a proper civic reception. The team and the fans deserve to celebrate properly in Newcastle.”

On Monday afternoon, it was confirmed by the club that a parade will take place on Saturday March 29 with a special event planned for supporters. Full details are expected to follow in the near future.
