Sky Sports Germany has clarified the news linking Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk with a move to Bayern Munich.
Van Dijk is among a trio of Liverpool players, alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who have just over two months remaining before their contracts expire.
Although the Dutch defender appears most likely to extend his seven-year stay at Anfield, there is still uncertainty over his future with some top European clubs said to be interested in signing him.
French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain became one of the most recent clubs linked with a potential summer move after the defender was spotted deep in a discussion with the club’s chief at the end of Liverpool’s Champions League match at Anfield about a week back.
Although Liverpool remain locked in negotiation with the 33-year-old and his representatives, Van Dijk himself has publicly maintained there is no news about his future, leading to even more frustration from fans.
However, speaking after the defeat to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final seemed to suggest that he wants to remain at Anfield – asserting that he loves the club:
“Before the end of the season, there’s going to be news, “the Dutchman said.
“As long as I’m fully committed and have my full focus on the task ahead, and I love the club, that’s the main thing. That’s who I am.”
Bayern Munich were recently linked with a move for Van Dijk, with Football Insider claiming that the German giants “have contacted the agent of the Liverpool captain to open preliminary talks over a potential free transfer.”
However, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has now provided clarification on the reported interest, revealing that the Bavarians aren’t considering Van Dijk.
“Many new rumours linking FC Bayern with Virgil van Dijk are wide of the mark!” Plettenberg said.
“The 33-y/o world-class defender is currently not a topic at Bayern. There have also been no concrete talks or negotiations in recent times. Instead, Liverpool are still doing everything they can to extend his contract beyond the season and remain optimistic.”
At 33, Van Dijk remains at the peak of his powers, with his commanding performances helping Liverpool establish a commanding 15-point lead in the Premier League.
