Report: Man Utd now interested in‘very special’ £67m striker Dan Ashworth tried to sign for Newcastle United

Manchester United saw Rasmus Hojlund break his goal drought on Sunday afternoon but a new striker is still on the wish list this summer.

Manchester United simply haven’t scored enough goals this season, but the last few days have been hugely encouraging.

United beat Real Sociedad 4-1 on Thursday night with Bruno Fernandes firing a hat-trick at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim then watched on as United beat Leicester City 3-0 on Sunday, racking up seven goals in a matter of days.

Rasmus Hojlund celebrated ending his goal drought against the Foxes having gone 21 games without a goal.

That is a great moment for the Dane, but United will surely still be in the market for another goalscorer come the summer.

Manchester United want Hugo Ekitike

Joshua Zirkzee is now thriving as a number 10 and that means United may well spend again on a striker.

Dusan Vlahovic is on United’s radar amid doubts over his Juventus future but United may look towards the Bundesliga market.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg claims that United have already started talks over potential striking additions.

Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen are mentioned yet again whilst Plettenberg now claims that United are ‘closely monitoring’ Hugo Ekitike.

The Frenchman joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2022 before turning a loan move from Reims permanent.

The move to Paris just never really worked out though and after showing potential on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, he joined the Bundesliga club permanently.

Ekitike has been exceptional this season, smashing 19 goals and eight assists in 38 appearances.

Tall, quick and skilful, Ekitike has shades of Alexander Isak and has been hailed as ‘very special’ by former Reims boss Oscar Garcia on the official Ligue 1 website.

Plettenberg recently suggested that Frankfurt want €80million (£67million) for Ekitike, meaning United may need to cough up big cash for his signature.

🚨🆕 Eintracht Frankfurt are preparing for the departure of Hugo #Ekitike this summer, with the 22-y/o striker likely to leave.

Dan Ashworth wanted Hugo Ekitike at Newcastle United

The comparisons towards Isak certainly carry more weight when you factor in that Newcastle tried to sign Ekitike before landing Isak from Real Sociedad.

As reported by The Chronicle in 2022, Dan Ashworth held talks with Ekitike’s agent Karl Mwalako Buchmann to discuss a move to Newcastle.

Ashworth moved on to become United’s sporting director in 2024 but lasted just a matter of months.

Perhaps Ashworth brought that interest in Ekitike to United, putting him on the radar for the future.

Whether Ashworth was involved in the initial interest or not, Ekitike has been so good this season that United simply have to look into signing him this summer with his potential to become a truly complete striker.
