Alexander Isak celebrates with teammates after scoring Newcastle's second goal during the Carabao Cup Final
Celebrations in Newcastle went on way into the night on Sunday evening as Eddie Howe's side made history by winning the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium to end a 70-year trophy drought for the club.
After the heartbreak of losing the final in this competition only two years ago in 2023, the Newcastle United supporters descended on the capital in their numbers over the weekend to make amends. Supporters were able to start to dream at half-time as Dan Burn fired Newcastle in front just moments before.
Liverpool, on the other hand, struggled to get going, likely feeling the effects of the 120 minutes they played midweek against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Alexander Isak then sent the Newcastle end of Wembley into absolute bedlam when he drilled home the second early in the second-half.
Despite a late stoppage time goal from Liverpool substitute Federico Chiesa, it was too little too late for Arne Slot's side. Referee John Brooks blew his whistle and the party could get underway.
70 painfully long years of hurt was over and it was Eddie Howe's side who finally rewrote the history books.
