Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United make feelings clear on Jadon Sancho return following Chelsea decision

Manchester United have clarified their feelings on any potential return for Jadon Sancho amid reports about a bizarre situation surrounding his Chelsea loan contract.

In the final days of the 2024 summer transfer window, Jadon Sancho left Manchester United to join Chelsea on loan for the 2024/25 season.

It was later revealed that the two clubs had agreed on a deal requiring Chelsea to pay £25 million for the winger in the summer.

Sancho had been exiled by Erik ten Hag the previous season and sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund. Although he was reintegrated into the Old Trafford squad in July 2024, his long-term future at the club remained uncertain.

Since his move to Stamford Bridge, Sancho has made 27 appearances for Chelsea, scoring twice and registering six assists.

What United think about a potential Sancho return

Earlier this month, a report from the Daily Mail revealed that there was still a chance that Sancho could return to Old Trafford this summer because a contract between player and club had not been agreed.

Usually if an obligation to buy a player following a loan is agreed, it means said player already had a contract agreement in place for when the move becomes permanent, but due to the haste in which the loan was organised, there was not time.

If Chelsea do not reach an agreement with Sancho, they would have to pay a fine to United. However, according to the latest reports, Chelsea fully intend to reach a deal with Sancho ahead of the summer and do not intend to send him back to Old Trafford.

Despite critics, it’s claimed that Chelsea remains happy with Sancho’s recent form and see him as a part of Enzo Maresca’s squad going forward.

What United think about Sancho right now

Amid the debacle, some United fans have pointed out that Rúben Amorim’s current 3-4-3 set-up would suit Sancho, leading some to wonder if United would not be against his return.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, this is not the case. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Italian transfer specialist confirmed that United do not want the English winger to return this summer.

“We can confirm that reports we had in recent days are true. Chelsea can pay a fee to Man Utd and not proceed with the obligation to buy. This is not the intention.

“From day one, Chelsea signed Jadon Sancho because they want to keep Sancho and he wants to be at Chelsea. Obviously United don’t want Sancho back.”

United are paying around half of Sancho’s wages for the rest of this season, and with others such as Marcus Rashford, Christian Eriksen, VIctor Lindelöf, and Antony all set to depart alongside Sancho, the club are set to save over £1 million a week in wages.
