Incoming Arsenal director eyes move for La Liga midfielder

Arsenal moved to within 12 points of Premier League leaders Liverpool by beating Chelsea 1-0 on Sunday.

Mikel Merino’s early goal secured all three points for the Gunners in an underwhelming encounter at The Emirates, moving Mikel Arteta’s side marginally closer to the Reds.

Chelsea, meanwhile, remain fourth in the top flight standings but have now won just four of their last 13 Premier League games.

This summer could be one of significant change at Arsenal, with former sporting director Edu Gaspar has ing left his role earlier this season.

TBR Football claims that Andrea Berta is set to replace Edu, and the 53-year-old is keen for Arsenal to make a move to sign Atlético Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios.

Berta worked alongside Barrios during his spell as the sporting director of Atletico, and the report claims that he remains a keen admirer of the player.

Arteta could look to bolster his midfield options this summer

The Gunners have previously shown interest in Barrios, 21, who has established himself as a key player for the Spanish side in recent months.

In total the midfielder has now played more than 90 times for Atletico at senior level, having graduated through the youth academy in the Spanish capital.

The young midfielder is contract to Atleti until the end of the 2027/28 campaign, but the report claims that his current deal includes a release clause set at a staggering £84 million.

It remains to be seen, however, whether or not Arsenal will realise their interest in the central midfielder and move to sign him any time soon.

It is also claimed that the North London side continue to focus on a move to sign fellow midfielder Martin Zubimendi from La Liga side Real Sociedad.

Current Gunners midfielder Thomas Partey has been heavily linked with a move away from The Emirates this summer.
