One Surprising Explosion Explains Eagles’ Free Agency Patience

Plenty of fans of the Philadelphia Eagles haven't been thrilled with the organization's patient approach to free agency this offseason.

The organization has lost six starters total from last year's championship team, and the Eagles haven't been big spenders to replace those veterans to this point in the offseason.

Of course, a poor free agent class and a ballooning market for some key positions on the roster may be the perfect reason why.

Philadelphia came into this offseason with limited cap space. That number increases to over $60 million in the 2026 offseason before an official salary cap tally has been made.

But the Eagles also know that a big chunk of that will go to extending most of their young core. Especially with one position group seeing another lucrative bump in their own contract negotiations.

With All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley receiving a three-year, $90 million contract extension with the Houston Texans, the cornerback market has now been reset to the veteran's $30 million-a-year average.

The Eagles may have just drafted two standout corners in Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, but they can certainly look ahead to those pending negotiations and see Stingley's contract as a big marker to meet in a couple of years.

Dejean and Mitchell were two of the highest-graded cornerbacks in the league last season in their first year. They were a big part in the Eagles winning Super Bowl LIX against the Chiefs.

And with so many young stars to extend, the Eagles know they must get in front of those deals.

Especially at the cornerback position at this rate.
