Browns Turn Heads with Joe Flacco Update

Arguably no team lays claim to a stranger quarterback situation in the NFL than the Cleveland Browns. The team has one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the league in Deshaun Watson though he may be the least desired player for the position.

Watson has missed an abundance of his time in Cleveland due to injury and has not played to his billing when he has been available. A tear of his Achilles in January has now put his 2025 prospects in serious jeopardy.

Cleveland traded for Kenny Pickett, but his lacking resumé does not inspire much confidence for a team that should be competitive based on the expenses elsewhere on the roster.

In addition, the Browns hold the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft and have the opportunity to draft their quarterback of the future. The timing may not work for this offseason, but the option is readily available.

It is certainly a unique spot, but apparently they may not have explored all options as they make their arrangements at quarterback.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer listed Cleveland as one of several teams that have "checked in" on free agent Joe Flacco.

The veteran journeyman became a fan favorite in his stint with Cleveland back in 2023, throwing 13 touchdowns in the five games that he played. Flacco took over in Week 13 that season after Watson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.

After losing his first start, Flacco rattled off four straight wins that helped Cleveland put the finishing touches on a playoff berth.

Now should Browns fans expect that same magic if he reunites with his former team? Maybe not. But Flacco is a more than capable insurance option if the Pickett substitution hits a wall early or midway through next season.

That of course assumes Pickett earns the job. Even if Cleveland sides with a rookie they select in this draft, Flacco is a fine backup to have in reserve in case of emergency if no other team signs him first. .
