New Orleans Pelicans guard Trey Murphy III has suffered a season-ending torn labrum in his right shoulder, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.
The injury is a devastating blow to both Murphy and the Pelicans, who have struggled with injuries throughout the season.
Murphy sustained the injury during Monday night's 127-81 loss to the Detroit Pistons. He played just one minute before exiting the game after diving for a loose ball.
Despite the Pelicans' announcement that Murphy's X-rays turned negative, further evaluation revealed the severity of the injury, ultimately ending his season.
Before this setback, Murphy was having a breakout year in his fourth NBA season.

He was averaging 21.2 points per game and had already surpassed 150 made three-pointers for the third consecutive season, according to ESPN.
Murphy's injury is another addition to the Pelicans' long list of health issues this season.
Zion Williamson previously missed significant time, while Herb Jones and Dejounte Murray are also dealing with season-ending injuries. Even before his trade to the Toronto Raptors, Brandon Ingram suffered multiple ankle injuries that have kept him sidelined.
The Pelicans entered the game against the Pistons with an 18-50 record, making them a struggling team with little incentive to rush any injured players back onto the court.
This latest injury further dampens an already disappointing season for the Pelicans, leaving fans wondering what could have been if the team had stayed healthy. For now, Murphy will focus on recovery, with hopes of returning stronger next season.
