Behdad Eghbali played key role in major exit at Stamford Bridge, one Chelsea star is now really starting to benefit - opinion

A lot of Chelsea fans have criticised Behdad Eghbali and Clearlake Capital following their acquisition of the Blues in 2022.

Loads of supporters have not been happy with Chelsea‘s transfer strategy under Eghbali and Todd Boehly, for example.

The club have invested so much money in young players who still need time to grow. They are close to signing another youngster with Sporting Lisbon’s Dario Essugo set to join Chelsea.

All in all, a lot of transfer business that Chelsea have done over the last few years has been very questionable. But Eghbali’s decision to offload one player last summer was probably a good one.

Behdad Eghbali facilitated Raheem Sterling’s move to Arsenal

One signing that has not worked out for Eghbali and Boehly is Raheem Sterling. After a couple of disappointing seasons in west London, Chelsea need to get rid of Sterling permanently in the next transfer window.

The winger is currently on loan at Arsenal, a move that Eghbali facilitated last August.

It has been claimed that Sterling’s switch to Arsenal was driven by Eghbali after the 30-year-old was frozen out of Enzo Maresca‘s squad.

At that point, Sterling clearly wanted out of Chelsea, while it seems that Eghbali had no issue with him departing.

The England international’s loan to the Gunners has not gone to plan. In total, he has made just four starts in the Premier League this season.

However, at Chelsea, one player has really benefitted because of Sterling’s departure.

Tyrique George benefitting from Raheem Sterling exit

Maresca has been able to give minutes to Chelsea youngster Tyrique George, especially of late.

The teenage winger has appeared in all of the Blues’ last three Premier League fixtures, including their recent 1-0 loss to Arsenal.

George even managed to register an assist in his side’s 4-0 win against Southampton, while he also did the same in a Conference League tie versus Copenhagen earlier this month.

The absences of Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk have undoubtedly helped him but so has Sterling’s loan move to Arsenal.

Had the former Manchester City star been at Stamford Bridge this season, you suspect that George would not have been getting all of these opportunities. Maresca would have been forced to satisfy a big-name player thought to be earning more than £300,000 a week, which probably would have meant fewer chances for George.
