Despite missing their two star players, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, Denver still managed to overcome the Warriors, who appeared fatigued and unprepared for the game.
Stephen Curry, the Warriors' superstar, seemed to struggle the most, battling fatigue as his usual sharp shooting was off. He finished with just 20 points, shooting only 28% from the field (6/21).
After the game, Jimmy Butler took responsibility for not stepping up in support of Curry, stressing that the team needed to do more to help their leader.
"It's okay to be tired. That’s on me and on us as a team to pick up the slack for him," Butler remarked postgame, via Anthony Slater.
"As much as everyone wants to think he's superhuman, he's not," Butler added. "He's our leader, and we need to protect him at all costs. That's on me for sure, but everyone else needs to step up and do their part to give him some relief."
Butler also highlighted the importance of creating good looks for Curry, stressing that executing plays and avoiding turnovers would make the game easier for everyone.
"Make sure we don't turn the ball over, one. Make sure we get a good shot on goal. Execute. Whenever you execute and get the ball where it needs to go, that's my job more than anybody's. And maybe Dray's. Then we make Steph's life easier," Butler explained.
With this loss, the Warriors fall to a 39-29 record but remain in the sixth spot in the Western Conference.
