Alan Shearer Highlights What Graham Potter Has "Got To" Change If West Ham Are To Move Up The Table

BBC pundit Alan Shearer says West Ham head coach Graham Potter has “got to” find a better balance in terms of performances home and away.

Since replacing Julen Lopetegui in the dugout, Potter has secured some big results on the road, including a victory against Arsenal at the Emirates. They were also minutes from beating Everton at the weekend but Shearer pointed out that, despite those displays, their form at the London Stadium leaves a lot to be desired:

“I think it was important that they bounced back after the performance [against Newcastle]. I think they were really poor against Newcastle.”

“They’ve actually been better away from home than they have been at home. They have got to find that balance.”

West Ham’s results following Potter’s arrival

The Hammers have won two and lost three home fixtures since Potter’s appointment back in January, having suffered defeats at the hands of Crystal Palace, Brentford and Newcastle.

Results on the road haven’t actually been that much better, with a win, two draws and a defeat, although they have faced some tough teams, including Arsenal, Aston Villa and Chelsea.

The lack of threat up front

Although there has been a marked improvement defensively over the last couple of months, the lack of goals at the other end of the pitch is rather concerning.

West Ham have only scored 4 times in their last 5 fixtures and it is difficult to pick up results on a consistent basis if you can’t find the back of the net.

Obviously, the absence of an out-and-out striker does present difficulties but that won’t really be an excuse after the international break. As well as having Evan Ferguson and Danny Ings available, Niclas Fullkrug should be back to full fitness when the Irons take on Wolves at the start of next month.
